Dating Abuse Vigil

Well, I've arrived in sunny Southern California where I've begun a new chapter in my photo life at the Orange County Register. It's been pretty fun so far, and a lot different. How could it not be? While my Midwestern friends are shoveling snow and coping with a polar vortex, I'm wearing shorts and hitting up the beach.

As for some pictures, I went to a vigil for victims of dating abuse in Tustin, Calif. I was really struck by how many people were affected by this problem. A lot of courageous people came out and talked about their experiences. Incredible people for sharing their stories.

Jamie Middleton, a survivor of dating abuse, sheds a tear while listening to speakers of the 4th Annual Candlelight Vigil for Teen Dating Violence in Tustin.

Attendees look at framed photos of women who have died at the hands of their boyfriends.

Officers Naomi Hernandez and Rebecca Reger of the Orange County Sheriff's Department listen victims of dating abuse sshare their survivors stories.

The photo I barely got because it was so dark. But because the event was called, 'a candlelight vigil' I knew the editors wouldn't be pleased if I didn't get this.
